 Home Security and Safety Tips
- Install a security alarm system and use it
- Lock doors and windows when not home
- Install deadbolt door locks
- Install peep holes in front door
- Have solid wood or steel clad doors
- Replace door glass with non-breakable glass or plastic
- Use 3" long screws to secure door strike plates
Windows
- Use 3/4" dowel rods to secure window
- Drill holes and pin window frame with removable nails
Outside
- Lights with motion sensors or leave on all night-front and back
- Trim back bushes lower than the first floor windows
- Never leave extra keys hidden under rocks or other locations
- Don't leave ladders or tools laying in yard for burglar to use
Fire Safety
- Install and maintain photoelectric type smoke detectors - preferably monitored
- Have a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year
- If escaping a burning house - hold your breath and crawl out of a door or window
